Bhagwant Mann Targets Raghav Chadha After BJP Switch; Political Rift Deepens in Punjab-AAP Row

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann criticizes Raghav Chadha after his switch to the Bharatiya Janata Party with six other MPs, triggering a major political fallout. Chadha accuses AAP of corruption, while BJP and AAP trade sharp statements amid deepening tensions in Punjab politics and Rajya Sabha representation shifts.

Chandigarh: Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, a senior leader of the Aam Aadmi Party, has launched a sharp political attack on Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament Raghav Chadha a day after the latter, elected from Punjab, joined the Bharatiya Janata Party along with several other lawmakers.

Without naming Chadha directly, Mann posted a remark in Punjabi language on social media, stating that ginger, garlic, cumin, fenugreek powder, red chili, black pepper, and coriander together enhance the taste of a vegetable dish, but individually they cannot constitute a complete dish. The statement was widely interpreted as a veiled criticism of Chadha’s political shift.

The Bharatiya Janata Party strongly condemned Mann’s remarks, terming them an insult to farmers who cultivate ginger and garlic. Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Saini also criticized the Punjab Chief Minister, stating that Mann “does nothing but make jokes all day,” adding that such remarks may entertain the public but do not contribute to systemic governance reforms.

Mann’s post came a day after Raghav Chadha announced his decision to join the Bharatiya Janata Party along with six other Aam Aadmi Party Members of Parliament, effectively breaking away two-thirds of the party’s representation in the Rajya Sabha. Chadha, a Rajya Sabha member from Punjab, accused the Aam Aadmi Party of corruption as the primary reason behind his departure.

In a press conference, Chadha stated that he had devoted 15 years of his life to the Aam Aadmi Party but claimed that the party had deviated from principles of honest politics. He further alleged that the party had become corrupt and compromised, asserting that he could no longer remain associated with its functioning. He also stated that he intended to move closer to the public and distance himself from what he described as wrongdoing within the party.

Chadha was accompanied at the press conference by Members of Parliament Ashok Mittal and Sandeep Pathak. He further stated that he had the support of four additional Members of Parliament—Harbhajan Singh, Swati Maliwal, Rajinder Gupta, and Vikram Sahney—who were also expected to join the Bharatiya Janata Party.

Aam Aadmi Party convenor Arvind Kejriwal responded with a brief statement on social media, alleging that the Bharatiya Janata Party had once again betrayed the people of Punjab.

The political fallout follows an earlier internal crisis within the Aam Aadmi Party, when Chadha was removed from his position as deputy leader in the Rajya Sabha. The party had also requested the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha to restrict Chadha from speaking under the party’s allotted quota. Chadha had responded to these actions through video messages, describing them as part of a coordinated campaign against him.

The developments mark a significant escalation in political tensions, reshaping party dynamics in Punjab and weakening the Aam Aadmi Party’s representation in the Upper House of Parliament.
